A Little About Sarah

Headshot2020 copySarah Karl Schroeder is a veteran content, marketing, and communications strategist with roots in outdoor adventure, self-improvement, and wellness. She has been creating and selling experiences that help companies launch, grow, and nurture relationships (internal and external) for more than 20 years.

Building on her communications, marketing and sales background in outdoor adventure, self-improvement and wellness content, Sarah earned a graduate certificate in developing healthy communities from Tufts University. Throughout that program, Sarah focused on the psychology of behavior change and how it can be used to develop innovative programs that increase physical activity and overall wellness on a private, community, and national level.

Sarah thrives in innovative environments, and is excited to work with companies to get people more involved in their own physical, mental, professional and community well-being —  and to broaden their sense of what community is so they can engage with, grow and protect it. Here’s how she got here…

Sarah started her career at National Geographic Magazine where she worked as a Researcher and Africa Area Specialist. She left the yellow-bordered magazine to earn her Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Following J-school, Sarah helped launch Blue: The New Adventure Lifestyle Magazine before leaping into the new frontier of the internet where she helped launch a number of media and e-commerce companies in New York and San Francisco including eFit.com, iParty.com, Tickle.com (a self-improvement personality and career test company which was acquired by Monster Worldwide) and Mode Media, one of the largest trailblazing blog networks (formerly known as Glam Media).

In those roles, Sarah led Sales Development, Editorial, and Content Marketing groups to conceive strategies, write, edit, design and execute turn-key digital marketing programs for premium brands like Coca Cola, Nike, Gillette, Crest, L’Oreal, Gap, and many others across a variety of product categories including health, wellness, Broadway and TV shows, movie premieres and more.  She worked with cross-functional teams and management to successfully develop new revenue streams during the .com bust for a company that thrived during the downturn and was later acquired. She has pitched clients, upsold accounts, managed strategic business partner accounts, repped publishers at industry trade shows like Outdoor Retailer, recruited brand ambassadors, and collaborated with partners like Women’s Health Magazine, the Oxygen Network, Johnson & Johnson, Hallmark, Victoria’s Secret, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and Marie-Claire Magazine to come up with uniquely integrated (and mutually beneficial) partner programs.

Her writing has appeared in Forbes Travel Guides, WIRED Magazine, Reuters.com, More Magazine, Action Asia Magazine, Blue Magazine, Discovery.com, The Chicago Sun-Times online, Women.com, Livestrong.com, AllBusiness.com and other outlets. She has also served as an expert health and wellness commentator for Johnson & Johnson.  As for the nuts and bolts? Sarah has shepherded groups through channel launches, SEO audits, content audits, budding business relationships, startup rough patches, shifts to new content management systems, and site conversion to responsive design.

Sarah has always been active and interested in the outdoors, sports, self-improvement, health, and wellness. Her favorite assignments have found her flying upside-down in a stunt plane, testing gear outside of a sweat lodge in British Columbia, becoming part of a world-record-setting string of bungee jumps in New Zealand, driving the Big Sur coastline, and chasing down adventure racers through the razor grass of Brazil and bat guano of Borneo. She’s also reported and co-authored articles and eBooks on living the best you can — from alternative therapies for AIDS patients, to the psychology of behavior change, from the coolest gear innovations, to adopting more healthful lifestyles at any age. Thanks to her upbringing in Chicago, she is a fearless champion for the underdog and enthusiastic teammate when the chips are down. She currently lives just south of Denver with her family, a lab and a guinea pig. She is determined to become a master pickleball player.
